I’m sure you’ve always dreaded waiting in line at your favorite coffee place during a non-pandemic season. The only other way to enjoy a cold brew is to make one at home in a simple mason jar!

But before we answer that question, we must discuss some things you need to know.
3 Things to Know Before You Start Your Cold Brew
1. Making cold brew takes longer
If you thought making cold brew at home takes as much time as making a hot cuppa, think again. While ordering a cold brew will take you the less time, your pocket and taste buds will thank you for brewing your coffee at home. We believe brewing at home is worth the time you spend making it.
Although mixing these ingredients takes no time at all, the steeping process can take over 12 hours! However, if you’re willing to wait, you’re in for a real treat.
2. It’s less acidic
Cold-brew is certainly less acidic than an espresso. However, you do have control over your ingredients to add and subtract as per your need.
3. Prefer coarsely-ground coffee
While you can use any coffee variety, always prefer to have coarsely-grounded beans for the best effect.
Guide to Cold Brew Coffee in a Mason Jar
Making cold brew coffee in a mason jar is easier than most things you do. Just have these ingredients at hand and follow the steps we’ve outlined for you!
- A mason jar (8 oz)
- Coarsely ground coffee
- A stirring spoon
- A strainer
- An additional sieve (cotton cloth/cocktail napkin/thin coffee filter)
While you can change the measurements based on your requirements, make sure you follow a 1:3 ratio of coffee and water, respectively. This ratio keeps the brew from becoming too bitter while still allowing it to be flavourful.
Easy Steps to Make Cold Brew Coffee
You don’t need much to make some nice cold brew now, do you? Once you have all the ingredients lined up, just stick to the steps laid out for you below for an easy brew.
Add the ground beans to your jar
Since we recommend opting for a 1:3 ratio, make sure you measure the ground beans accordingly and add it to the jar. For an 8 oz jar, you can use ⅓ cup of coffee. For a bigger jar, calculate the measurements and add them as per the instructions.
Add some cold water
Fill up the jar with half the cold water that you measured for the brew. Remember the ratio we decided. Stir the mixture to ensure every ground coffee bean is wet.
Pour in the remaining water
After mixing the coffee well, add in the remaining cold water and give it yet another stir.
Let it steep
Keeping the steep time right is vital. You don’t want your cold brew to be too bitter or too light. Most people recommend letting it steep overnight. A certain popular coffee franchise also steeps for over 24 hours.
You can decide your steeping time based on your preference. If you’re a fan of stronger, flavourful coffee, you may as well let it steep for longer in the refrigerator. In case it turns a little bitter, you can always add some cold water to dilute the concentrate.
Time to strain the coffee
Once steeped, it is time to filter out the ground beans and separate the concentrate.
Straining coffee seems like an easy job. However, it can quickly get messy and leave you with a murky-looking concentrate if you choose the wrong material for the sieve. Here’s what you can use to strain your cold brew efficiently.
A cotton cloth could be anything, from a plain cloth or a cocktail napkin to a clean, lint-free kerchief. Make sure this is large enough to cover your usual sieve for an additional filter. Also, refrain from using a light-colored cloth if you hate food or beverage stains.
Paper coffee filters
Thin paper coffee filters are perfect for getting a clear brew at a quick pace. The thicker the filter, the more the time you’ll consume to filter it all.
Just place the cloth or coffee filter over a sieve and pour out the concentrate through it into a jar or pitcher.
Your cold brew is now ready for you to enjoy! Pour some in a glass filled with ice cubes and slowly sip in with pleasure.
If you’re not one for a bitter brew, add some more cold water or substitute water for milk or cream until it is more to your liking.
Refrigerate the rest
Any brew left after you have already had your cup for the day can be refrigerated in an airtight jar for up to two weeks! So, you needn’t make the brew every single day. You can just make the brew once during the weekend for the entire week and store it in your refrigerator to be used when you feel like it!
